Tours inside Chernobyl nuclear power plant

CHERNOBYL TOUR® offers study trips to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant for professionals, atomic students and specialists.

A tour to the heart of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone - the building of ChNPP, which is now in the process of decommissioning and construction of the "Arch" - new confinement, which will cover the dilapidated object "Shelter".

As part of a study tour to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, you can visit:

  • construction site of the new confinement "Arch". The construction of the NSC "Arch" is one of the stages of the international SIP Projects by the transformation of the object "Shelter" into an ecologically safe system.
Construction of a new "Sarcophagus" over the old one, will significantly reduce the danger of an existing object "Shelter". It also allows fulfilling the most important stages of the project safe for the environment: extraction of fuel mass and its subsequent burial; dismantling of unstable structures of the old shelter.
New Safe Confinement is one of the biggest arch structures in the world. Its height is over 108 meters, its length is 162 meters, and span of the arch is more than 257 meters. Weight of the construction is more than 25 000 tones.

  • mockup hall at the Administrative and Service Complex (ASC-1) of the ChNPP. Here, professional staff of the Chernobyl NPP will introduce visitors to organizational and technical structure of the nuclear power plant. With the help of visual layouts you can find out how the mechanism of nuclear power plant functions.

  • "golden corridor" extending through the building of the ChNPP. The famous and seems to be endless corridor. This is the place where the NPP staff was moving fast at the accident night on April 26, in inhuman conditions they were solving problems, which prevented a total collapse of the European, and perhaps even of the world standard.
Tired, exhausted, but focused and quick-acting professionals, atomic scientists of the Chernobyl NPP prevented more major accident by their actions. Here the history was frozen which was never shown on Soviet television.

  • the control panel of the reactor (CP). If the nuclear reactor is the heart of the ChNPP then the control panel is its brain. This is where the atomic titanium called unit is being controlled. Here, tense and cigarette smoke is in the air, here we can find the highest governing staff of the working shift. Control over all nodes, beginning with the reactor department and ending with the turbine, is being led here. Professionals make decisions here. Made. Block shields of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant will never blink with lights again. But you have a chance to feel yourself in shoes of those who once stood at the control panel, to imagine the pressure, the responsibility, the severity of knowledge, returning to the past for a moment.

  • machine (turbine) hall. Heavy work area. Nuclear energy is converted into electrical energy here. Huge turbines are turning generators of high power. Contrary to stereotypes, the most terrible fire was here - in the engine room on April 26, and not on the roofs of the plant. And it was extinguished by the brave NPP workers.
Highly radioactive debris from the destroyed reactor hall fell on the roof of the turbine hall and, after breaking it through they damaged the seventh turbo generator. Tons of turbine oil caught fire. Fighting the fire in the turbine hall of the block 4 took all night of April 26.

  • reactor hall. Heart of the unit. The nuclear reactor is situated here. This is the place where nuclear energy is created. Workers in the nuclear power plant will tell how it happens. In the vast central hall of the reactor department, you will be able to see the lid of the reactor - biological protection, popularly nicknamed as "Elena". Exactly the same two thousand tons "Elena" flew under the pressure of the explosion at Unit 4. Mangled, it still lies edgewise in the crater of the destroyed reactor under the Sarcophagus. Here in the twin reactor department visitors can see the similar unloading and loading machine (ULM) which was thrown by the explosion as a match. And this is with its weight of 480 tons! Being in the reactor hall, you can imagine what was happening in the midst of the most famous man-made disaster in the world.

  • Memorial to Valery Khodemchuk, buried under the ruins of the reactor. The first victim of the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant  in 1986, became an employee of the reactor department of the 2nd turn, senior operator of the main circulation pumps Valery Ilyich Khodemchuk. Huge pumps weighing tens of tons each controlled by him, were responsible for circulation of coolant (water) in the reactor. In the fatal moment Khodemchuk was in the north loop of the north side of the reactor, just where the power of the explosion threw up a piece of the unit wall for the height of almost 50 meters. Fragments of mutilated pieces and structures were brought outside by the force of explosion. Valery Ilyich was buried under the rubble. His loyal companions were searching him throughout the night, while receiving lethal doses of radiation. But they never found him.
Coming to the Sarcophagus, every visitor should know that they also come to a personal sarcophagus of this man, where he stayed forever. Since literally Unit 4 became a tomb for the worker of the Chernobyl NPP Memorial to commemorate Valeriy Ilyich was installed directly inside the building of the Chernobyl NPP by his wife and colleagues.

  • room with MCP (main circulation pumps). You can visit the similar to working place of Valery Khodemchuk room, and see the huge pumps, which once used to force moving tons of water through the reactor. Then the water was getting into special barrels - separators, where steam was separated from the water, and it (water) went to the next circle. Steam was taken into the turbine, which were spinning and running a generator that produced electricity.
Here you will learn from the professionals - employees of the Chernobyl NPP about the important part of the nuclear power plant work.

At the entrance to the industrial area of the ChNPP, in accordance with the rules of stay at this facility, you will need to wear a provided gown of an NPP employee, shoe covers and you'll need to attach to the gown a special dosimeter. The average length of a visit to Chernobyl NPP depends on the selected items and is 2-4 hours. Visiting Chernobyl NPP is usually combined with private tours to the Chernobyl zone or Slavutich, from where the official train goes straight to ChNPP.

Attention! The order and the list of visited places can be changed during the tour in case of carrying out the technical works at the facilities of the station.
